Steel and garnet hues dominate my thoughts as I gaze upon Bayonne High School. Founded in 1936, Bayonne High School serves students from ninth through twelfth grades. It stands as a beacon of education in Bayonne New Jersey.

Bayonne High School started as two separate institutions. Sweeney Senior High School and Pulaski Vocational Technical School joined in 1953. The school then reorganized into six houses in 1973.

Bayonne High School faced challenges. A stabbing in 1997 led to new safety measures. Discussion groups and metal detectors were introduced. By 2000, it became a model for school safety.

Bayonne High School received recognition for its excellence. It was named a Star School by the New Jersey Department of Education in 1995 to 1996.

The school offers a wide range of Advanced Placement courses. Students can study AP Biology and AP Calculus AB. They can also explore AP English Literature and Composition and AP United States History. College credit is available through agreements with several universities.

Bayonne High School’s campus has unique features. It is the only public high school in New Jersey with an on-site ice rink. The campus includes three gymnasiums a planetarium and a 600-seat auditorium.

The Bayonne High School Bees compete in the Hudson County Interscholastic League. Sports include baseball football basketball and volleyball. The boys’ tennis team holds an impressive record. They were the overall state champions in 1951. From 1993 to 2011 the team reached the HCIAA championship for 19 consecutive years.

Bayonne High School has appeared in popular culture. Music videos by Bullet for My Valentine Mariah Carey and Nada Surf were filmed here. The school served as a location for the film Assassination of a High School President.

Bayonne High School boasts a list of notable alumni. Arthur F Burns served as chairman of the Federal Reserve. Frank Langella is a renowned actor. Barney Frank was a US congressman.

Today Bayonne High School continues its commitment to education and community. It prepares students for future success. The school’s acting principal is Keith Makowski. He leads a team of six vice principals. Each one is assigned to a house within the school. Bayonne High School remains a point of pride for the city.
