What was once called “Yellow Hook” due to the color of its soil is now the neighborhood of Bay Ridge. Bay Ridge sits in the southwest corner of Brooklyn. It’s a neighborhood rich in history and full of surprises. Bay Ridge was a rural escape for wealthy New Yorkers in the mid-1800s. They built stunning country homes along Shore Road, enjoying views of New York Bay. The arrival of the R train in 1916 brought a new wave of residents, transforming Bay Ridge into a middle-class community.

Bay Ridge has a fascinating connection to Norway. For years, Norwegian sailors settled in the area, making it feel a bit like a little Oslo. You can still see remnants of this heritage. The annual Norwegian Constitution Day Parade is a vibrant celebration of this culture. The parade ends in Leif Ericson Park where “Miss Norway” is crowned near a statue of Leif Ericson. The statue was a gift from Crown Prince Olav of Norway in 1939.

Bay Ridge is also home to Fort Hamilton Army Base. It’s one of the oldest military installations in the United States, dating back to 1831. It played a significant role in protecting New York Harbor during the Civil War and both World Wars. Today, it supports the Army National Guard and the United States Army Reserve.

You can’t talk about Bay Ridge without mentioning the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. Completed in 1964, it connects Bay Ridge to Staten Island and was once the world’s longest suspension bridge. Its construction was controversial, displacing thousands of residents. However, it became a symbol of Bay Ridge’s resilience and its connection to the rest of New York City.

Bay Ridge has parks, stunning architecture, and a charming waterfront. It’s a neighborhood where you can find echoes of old New York while enjoying its modern energy. You’ll find great food, a friendly atmosphere, and a unique slice of New York City history in Bay Ridge.
