The wooden structure is more than just a building; it is a living museum. Right here in front of you, stand the walls that witnessed the evolution of the Bay Area, a place brimming with history and stories that would have been lost to time without this museum.

The Bay Area Museum, a testament to the region’s rich past, is a local history museum that preserves the memories and artifacts of the Bay Area of Houston. From the very first settlers to the space age that landed astronauts in the nearby Johnson Space Center, the museum tells a story of pioneers, innovators, and the spirit of the community. This museum embodies the history of the Webster Presbyterian Church, originally erected in 1901. Before the church was transformed into the Bay Area Museum, it stood on the corner of Houston and Moody Streets. Its original sanctuary was destroyed by the 1900 Galveston hurricane, but the resilient community rebuilt it, and it served as a hub for community events and gatherings for decades.

In 1979, Maggie Plumb DeNike, the founder of the Lunar Rendezvous festival, envisioned turning this historic church into a museum. The festival was a way to celebrate the area’s connection to space exploration and was an important part of the local culture. The church was carefully moved to the grounds of Clear Lake Park, six and a half miles from its original location. The museum was dedicated in 1984 and continues to serve as a pillar of the community.

The museum’s collections are a treasure trove of mementos from the past, especially those related to the U.S. space program. Lady Bird Johnson and other donors contributed to the museum’s collection, which showcases the area’s connection to human spaceflight. Now, the museum hosts events, weddings, and museum guild meetings, keeping the spirit of community alive. The annual Lunar Rendezvous festival has been a cornerstone of museum funding ever since its inception in 1965 and continues to this day. The Bay Area Museum stands as a testament to the spirit of the community and the area’s unique history.
