Thomas Rees, a local artist, transformed this 200-year-old, six-meter giant into a visual narrative of biblical stories. The Baum der Erkenntnis isn’t a literal tree of knowledge like the one in Eden. It’s more of a tree of stories. It depicts scenes from the Old and New Testaments. Look closely, and you’ll see Adam and Eve’s expulsion from paradise. Higher up, Cain raises his hand against Abel. Noah’s Ark floats amidst rising waters. The Baum der Erkenntnis isn’t just about ancient tales. It reflects the artist’s fascination with contrasting forces. Birth and death, hope and despair, are intertwined within the carvings. Notice the juxtaposition of Jesus’ birth with the chilling skull of King Herod, a stark reminder of the massacre of the innocents. The open tomb, a symbol of resurrection, is countered by the cross of crucifixion. Below these, figures express grief and anguish. The Baum der Erkenntnis stood originally on Pfeiferberg as a Christmas attraction. Now, it has found its permanent home here, offering a quiet space for contemplation. This isn’t just art.
