What’s harder than a day’s work? Imagine being immortalized in concrete, forever carrying the weight of labor on your shoulders. That’s the story of the Bauarbeiter Sculpture, a monument to the working class right here in Frankfurt (Oder).
The Bauarbeiter, which translates to “construction worker” in German, isn’t your typical glamorous statue. No, this one, crafted from rough-hewn concrete, depicts a worker in his simple clothes, muscles straining as he carries a heavy load.
It’s a powerful image, meant to represent the thousands of unseen hands that built this city, brick by brick. The artist, Herbert Burschik, wanted to honor their effort, their dedication, and the vital role they play in our society. He believed that even the most ordinary jobs deserve recognition, that their contribution is what holds the fabric of a city together.
