Have you ever heard of a pagoda named after a lotus pond? Right here before us stands Wat Botum, also known as the “Temple of the Lotus Blossoms.” Established in 1442 by King Ponhea Yat, Wat Botum is a peaceful oasis in bustling Phnom Penh and a testament to Cambodia’s rich history. It’s one of the five oldest pagodas in the city. Before the Royal Palace was constructed, this land belonged to a farmer named Ta Yang, The pagoda was originally called Wat Khpop Ta Yang, after him. In the 1860s, during the reign of King Norodom, the pagoda was assigned to the Cambodian branch of the Dhammayuttika Nikaya, an order of Buddhism. It was also renamed Wat Botum, in honor of a lotus pond that once graced this very spot. As you explore the grounds, take note of the grand stupa. This impressive structure is over a century old and speaks to the enduring legacy of Buddhism in Cambodia. You’ll also find the tombs of numerous important figures, including prominent politicians and revered monks, their final resting places intertwined with the history of Wat Botum. Take a moment to appreciate the tranquility of this sacred site. Let the peace of Wat Botum wash over you as you reflect on the stories whispered within these ancient walls.
