Battlefield Primary School stands on Carmichael Place. It has been a cornerstone of the community for generations. The original building, designed by Andrew Balfour, opened its doors in 1904 as Battlefield Public School.
Disaster struck in the early 1960s. A fire ravaged the school. Prefabricated classrooms were erected to continue providing education. These temporary structures still accommodated Battlefield Primary School in 2004.
A neighboring building also played a role in the school’s history. Designed by McWhannell, Rogerson & Reid, it was built in 1912. This building was first known as Queen’s Park Junior Secondary. Later, it became Battlefield Secondary School until its closure in 1966. In 2004, Langside Nursery School occupied rooms there.
Battlefield Primary School has a log book dating back to 1912. Additional admission registers offer insights into the school’s past. These records are held at the Glasgow City Archives.
One notable former pupil shines brightly in the school’s history. Meta Ramsay attended Battlefield Primary. She became a prominent British diplomat. In 1996, she was created Baroness Ramsay of Cartvale.
