Established in 1868, the original Battle Ground Baptist Church served as a spiritual anchor for the Fazendeville community. However, progress sometimes comes at a cost. In the early 1960s, Fazendeville was expropriated, forcing the congregation to relocate. They rebuilt their beloved Battle Ground Baptist Church in the Lower 9th Ward of New Orleans. This new beginning, however, was soon met with adversity. Hurricane Betsy in 1965 brought devastating floods. The congregation persevered, rebuilding and strengthening their bonds. Then came the catastrophic blow of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The levee failures submerged the Lower 9th Ward, and the Battle Ground Baptist Church was once again faced with immense loss. Yet, even amidst the wreckage, the spirit of the church remained unbroken. The resilient congregation, embodying the very essence of their name, rallied together. They rebuilt their sanctuary, brick by brick, hymn by hymn, sermon by sermon. Battle Ground Baptist Church stands today as a testament to their enduring faith.
