Gazing across the water, can you sense the echoes of Battery Smyth? Here at Fort Strong, Battery Smyth played a vital role in defending Boston Harbor. Battery Smyth, completed in 1906, bristled with two powerful 3-inch M1902 guns on sturdy pedestals. These guns weren’t just for show. They were rapid-fire weapons, designed to stop fast-moving enemy ships and protect the harbor’s minefields. Battery Smyth’s guns had a range of over six miles, covering the channel between Long Island and Hull. Imagine the crews scrambling to their positions, the roar of the guns echoing across the water. Battery Smyth wasn’t alone in its mission. It was one of four 3-inch gun batteries at Fort Strong, each with two guns. These smaller batteries complemented the fort’s main armament: five massive 10-inch guns housed in Batteries Hitchcock and Ward. Together, these guns created a formidable defense, protecting Boston from any naval threat. However, Battery Smyth’s active service was relatively short-lived. In 1921, its guns were moved to Battery Basinger, another 3-inch emplacement at Fort Strong. Battery Smyth itself was never rearmed. Its concrete remains stand as silent witnesses to a time when Boston Harbor faced very real dangers, a testament to the ingenuity and foresight of those who designed and built Fort Strong’s defenses. While the guns are long gone, the story of Battery Smyth remains, etched in the concrete and whispered on the wind.
