Crumbling concrete whispers stories of war. This is Battery Kessler. Right here on Rockaway Beach it stands a silent sentinel.

Battery Kessler part of Fort Tilden was originally built in 1923. It was named after Colonel Percy M. Kessler. Later it was modernized and made a permanent installation in 1942. The battery represents a standard World War II design for a 6-inch gun battery. It was part of a larger system protecting New York Harbor.

Imagine the scene. Two Model 1900 6-inch guns stood ready on Model 1900 barbette carriages. They sat on concrete platforms. These guns were meant to defend against enemy ships. The reinforced concrete magazine nearby stored the ammunition. The magazine held high explosive and armor-piercing shells as well as powder. It had rooms for storage air compressors and even a chemical warfare service room. This was for protection from chemical attacks. There was also a latrine and an airlock.

The equipment needed to operate the guns was also housed here. Fire control and data transmission systems were essential. These allowed for accurate aiming and firing. Think of the crews. Men lived and worked here for years. They prepared for a war that thankfully did not directly reach these shores. They stood ready to defend the city.

Today only the magazine and one firing platform remain. The guns are long gone. Nature has slowly reclaimed the area. The concrete is weathered. Graffiti covers the walls. Yet Battery Kessler continues to stand. It’s a reminder of a time when coastal defenses were crucial. It’s a piece of history now part of Gateway National Recreation Area. It offers a glimpse into the past a powerful symbol of preparedness. It’s a stark reminder of war’s potential impact. Battery Kessler invites you to contemplate the past and the future.
