Gazing up at Battery Humphreys Commander Station, one might hear whispers of the past carried on the Pacific breeze. This seemingly unassuming bunker, perched atop Point Loma, played a vital role in San Diego’s coastal defense during World War II. Battery Humphreys Commander Station wasn’t just a place for soldiers; it was their vigilant watchtower against potential attacks from Imperial Japan. The upper bunker housed the command post, while the lower level served as an observation post. Soldiers here meticulously triangulated firing solutions for the battery’s two powerful 6-inch guns. These guns, each weighing 100,000 pounds and capable of launching 105-pound projectiles at almost 2.5 times the speed of sound, were a formidable force. They could strike targets up to 15 miles away. Battery Humphreys Commander Station offered a panoramic view of the ocean, a constant reminder of the ever-present threat. Life at Battery Humphreys Commander Station was a mix of tense vigilance and monotonous drills. The soldiers scanned the horizon, practiced firing procedures, and waited, always waited. Fortunately, the anticipated attack never came. However, Battery Humphreys wasn’t immune to tragedy. A chilling accident occurred on January 29, 1943. A faulty fuse caused an explosion in one of the guns, killing five men and injuring seven others. The blast was so powerful it shattered windows near the Point Loma Lighthouse. Named after Captain Charles Humphreys, the first commanding officer of Fort Rosecrans, Battery Humphreys stood as a symbol of San Diego’s long history of coastal defense, a tradition dating back to the late 18th century. The battery remained active until 1946 when the dawning of the nuclear age rendered such coastal defenses obsolete. Looking down the hill from Battery Humphreys Commander Station, you might notice another similar bunker. This structure housed observation posts for two other 6-inch gun emplacements, Battery Woodward and Battery Grant. These silent sentinels offer a glimpse into a critical period in San Diego’s past, a time of vigilance and uncertainty. They remind us of the sacrifices made and the constant threat that loomed over the Pacific coast.
