“Colonel Barnes wouldn’t believe his eyes,” Old Man Tiber muttered, adjusting his Coast Guard cap. We stood overlooking Battery Barnes 240, the wind whipping around us. “From coastal defense to city hall…then back to government hands, sort of.” Battery Barnes 240, originally just Battery 240, sits on Point Vicente. This location, part of the Point Vicente Military Reservation, was chosen to protect the northern entrance to the Catalina Channel during World War II. Construction started in April 1942, a flurry of activity meant to bolster defenses. Now, Battery Barnes 240 stands as a silent sentinel, watching over the coast. It’s hard to imagine the urgency of wartime construction, the constant fear of invasion hanging in the air. Back then, they didn’t name batteries after people. It was all code – Battery 240, simple and efficient. The 40th battery of the 200 series construction plan. Only in 1948 did it receive its current name, honoring Colonel Harry C. Barnes of the US Army Coast Artillery Corps. Ironically, barely a year later, the guns were gone, sold for scrap. The war was over, and the immediate threat had subsided. But the Point Vicente Military Reservation had a life beyond the big guns. It served as a training area and later housed the NIKE missile site LA-55. Imagine those sleek missiles poised for launch, a different kind of defense in a new kind of war. Today, the remnants of that era have been repurposed. The old NIKE buildings are now Rancho Palos Verdes City Hall. The launch area? A city storage and maintenance yard. Battery Barnes 240 itself is owned by the US Coast Guard. They utilize it as a radio beacon and aid to navigation, a quiet hum replacing the roar of cannons. From wartime urgency to peaceful purpose, Battery Barnes 240 has witnessed a dramatic transformation. A testament to changing times and the enduring need for vigilance, in one form or another.
