Visit Burbank partnered with DC. Together, they created this unique statue. It celebrates Batman’s 80+ years of fighting for good. The life-sized bronze statue was unveiled in Burbank’s busy downtown district.
Warner Bros. has been a pillar of the Burbank community for over 90 years. Visit Burbank wanted to honor this long-standing relationship. The statue symbolizes the connection between the studio, DC, and the city.
DC Creative Director Doug Prinzivalli said they brainstormed ideas. They decided Batman would be perfect to welcome visitors. The design comes from a DC Direct statue. This in-house toy company of Warner Bros. originally created a 7-inch figure. It was part of the Batman Black & White collectible line. The statue is based on Jim Lee’s art. Lee is the Publisher and Chief Creative Officer of DC. His art comes from the beloved graphic novel, Batman: Hush.
Jim Fletcher, DC Direct Creative Director, was proud to be part of this monument. He explained the statue celebrates Batman’s many versions over the years. Jim Lee’s iconic Batman is a fan favorite. It powerfully represents the Dark Knight at this large scale.
Jim Lee was pleased with how his work translated into 3D form. Alejandro Pereira sculpted the piece. Lee says he captured the Dark Knight’s majesty and strength.
The initial statue was much smaller. DC Direct and the DC Creative team collaborated closely. This was vital for creating the life-sized bronze statue. Prinzivalli said the DC Direct team was great to work with. Creating a digital file for a 7-inch collectible and outputting it as a 7.5-foot bronze statue was quite a feat.
The DC team worked with a local Burbank foundry. The American Fine Arts Foundry created the sculpture. Working with a local company strengthened the collaboration. It added to the feeling of a home-grown project.
Prinzivalli described working with The American Fine Arts Foundry as unique and wonderful. Their commitment to artistry and detail was astounding. He found pouring the molten bronze surreal and magical. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
This first-of-its-kind statue stands outside the Burbank AMC theaters. It watches over everyone who comes to see him.
