A chilling wind whispers secrets through the crumbling walls of Bateria Nr 14-15. This isn’t just any old military battery. Bateria Nr 14-15 Broscarei holds a dark and fascinating past. It stands as a silent testament to a bygone era a forgotten chapter in Bucharest’s history.

Built in the late 19th century by Carol I Bateria Nr 14-15 was one of 31 fortifications designed to protect Bucharest. It was strategically positioned near Magurele close to the nuclear reactor a gift from the Russians. This proximity added an unexpected layer to the battery’s story.

For almost two decades starting in 1960 Bateria Nr 14-15 served as a temporary storage site for tons of radioactive waste. Cobalt levels caused radiation to reach seven times the maximum safe limit. Imagine the hushed fear of those involved. The decontamination process was extensive. Workers dug fifty centimeters deep treating the earth and transporting it in nearly 6000 containers to Baia-Bihor. It stayed there until 2009 when it was finally repatriated to Russia.

Today Bateria Nr 14-15 Broscarei is less dangerous. It is however difficult to find hidden among the trees and undergrowth near the beltway. Locals often venture here for recreation leaving behind traces of their presence. Music and laughter clash with the building’s somber past. The symmetry of the tunnels is striking. Each path eventually leads to an exit or vent. Without a light however the tunnels feel endless and menacing.

The battery has gained a reputation. Stories of satanic rituals and devil worshippers have circulated. These add a layer of mystery and intrigue. These rumours make Bateria Nr 14-15 Broscarei one of Bucharest’s most interesting fortifications. The remnants of a curious past meet the thrill of urban exploration. The battery offers a unique blend of history mystery and modern intrigue. It stands as a reminder of Bucharest’s complex and often surprising past.
