A man named Friedrich Engelhorn, owner of a coal-gas works, founded a company called Badische Anilin und Soda Fabrik, or BASF for short. Engelhorn discovered he could extract aniline, a key ingredient in dyes, from coal tar, a byproduct of his gas works. His dye business boomed. He needed to expand. Mannheim’s city council, fearing pollution, refused his request for more land. So, Engelhorn moved his burgeoning operation across the Rhine to Ludwigshafen. There, he had access to ample space, river transport, and rail lines.
The BASF Visitor Center, opened in 2007 in the former bath house at Gate 2, stands as a testament to this history. The center hosts roughly 50,000 visitors annually. They come to explore the 2,000 square-meter exhibition space. This space boasts over 200 multimedia and interactive exhibits, offering a glimpse into the world of chemistry and BASF’s role in it. But site tours at BASF are not a new phenomenon. They have a rich history, spanning over a century. Originally intended for officials, these tours eventually opened to customers and the general public in the mid-1950s. By 1965, a large illuminated model of the factory had been created, showcasing the scale of BASF’s operations. The demand for tours kept growing, reaching around 30,000 visitors a year in the early 1980s.
The BASF Visitor Center now offers guided tours in ten languages, delving into the company’s history and the diverse applications of chemistry in various industries.
