Have you ever wondered where Los Angeles County’s aerial firefighters call home? That’s Barton Heliport. This isn’t your average airport. It’s a bustling hub of emergency response.

Barton Heliport stands as the headquarters for the L.A. County Fire Department’s Air Operations Section. Since 1957, it has been a crucial base for protecting millions of residents. This heliport operates around the clock. It ensures L.A. County is always prepared.

The Air Operations Section started small. It began with one pilot, one mechanic, and a single Bell 47 helicopter. This early helicopter could drop only 100 gallons of water. Today, Barton Heliport boasts a fleet of advanced aircraft.

Mechanics at Barton Heliport maintain a diverse fleet. This includes three Sikorsky S-70 Firehawks and five Bell 412 helicopters. These aircraft are multi-mission capable. They handle fire emergencies, medical services, and search and rescue.

Each helicopter is equipped with advanced technology. They have fixed water drop tanks, hoists, and powerful searchlights. Infrared scanning devices help crews find hotspots invisible to the naked eye. This allows for precise water and retardant drops.

The Sikorsky S-70 Firehawk is a standout aircraft. It can transport up to 13 people and carry 1,000 gallons of water. L.A. County was the first local government to purchase this type of helicopter. The Firehawk can refill its tank rapidly. It uses a snorkel hose to pump water at 1,000 gallons per minute.

The Bell 412 helicopters are also vital. They can transport up to 10 people and carry 360 gallons of water. These helicopters have a quick turnaround time. Each can deliver over 4,000 gallons of fire suppression material per hour.

Los Angeles County Fire Department has a rapid response time. Helicopters arrive on scene within 10 to 15 minutes. They utilize over 100 pre-determined helispots throughout the county. These helispots have water supplies for quick refills.

Last year, Air Operations responded to over 1,000 emergency medical calls. They also responded to over 280 fire calls. The aircrews dropped over 700,000 gallons of water and foam. They conducted close to 100 hoist rescues.

Barton Heliport is more than just a base. It’s a symbol of Los Angeles County’s commitment to safety. From a single helicopter to a fleet of advanced aircraft, the Air Operations Section has grown. It stands ready to protect and serve. Remember Barton Heliport. It represents dedication and innovation in emergency response.
