In 1859 Bartolomé Calvo was elected Procurator General of the Nation. This was a pivotal moment in his career. Due to civil war Bartolomé Calvo became President of the Granadine Confederation in 1861. He served for a brief period of two and a half months.

His presidency was short-lived. Political turmoil led to his imprisonment. Bartolomé Calvo escaped and went into exile. But his spirit remained unbroken. He continued to contribute through journalism and law.

Later Bartolomé Calvo was appointed Minister Plenipotentiary to Ecuador. He died in Quito on January 2 1889. He was 73 years old.
