Have you ever heard of a church saving another? Right here at 38 Cross Arthurlie Street stands Barrhead Evangelical Church. It became a sanctuary for the Barrhead Methodist Church congregation. Their old building on the same street, a beautiful red sandstone structure, had stood for 112 years. But time, and perhaps the rumble of traffic on Cross Arthurlie Street, took its toll. By 2016, the Methodist church was crumbling. Mushrooms sprouted from damp walls, squirrels nested in the damaged roof, and the heating failed repeatedly. Repairs were estimated at a staggering £26,000, a sum the congregation couldn’t afford. Barrhead Evangelical Church opened its doors to the displaced Methodists. The old sandstone building on Cross Arthurlie Street held memories of generations past. It had witnessed countless services since its construction in 1902. But its weakened foundations and leaky roof meant it was time to move on. In a beautiful act of community, the Barrhead Evangelical Church became the new home for the Methodist services. Now, within these walls, the spirit of the old Methodist church lives on.
