It all started with Colonel Edward Harden. He and his wife Julia lived in the beautiful mansion. This mansion stood where the zoo now sits. Julia left the estate to the city under special conditions. She wanted it named for her brother-in-law Major Clarence Barrett. She also insisted it never be a playground. Finally she wanted her husband to live there. After Julia died the city took over.
The Civilian Conservation Corps helped to build the zoo. It opened as the first educational zoo in the United States. This was a truly remarkable feat for that era. The Staten Island Zoological Society played a crucial role. They managed the exhibits the animals and the educational programs.
The zoo quickly gained popularity. By 1949 it housed over 1200 animals. Patricia O’Connor a pioneering woman veterinarian worked there. She was reportedly the only female veterinarian in any zoo nationwide. The zoo was spotless modern and even odorless.
Sadly there was also tragedy. In 1971 lead poisoning killed several animals. This prompted a nationwide push to end the use of leaded gasoline.
