The Barragem do Torr\u00e3o is located on the T\u00e2mega River. The river is the Douro’s largest tributary. The dam sits between Alpendorada and Rio de Moinhos. This places it near the Parque de Lazer de Alpendorada.
Construction of the Barragem do Torr\u00e3o began in 1979. It became commercially operational in 1988. This hydro power project boasts a capacity of 140MW. The project generates 221 GWh of electricity. The Barragem do Torr\u00e3o significantly contributes to the region’s power supply.
Energias de Portugal developed and owns the Barragem do Torr\u00e3o. Mota-Engil SGPS rendered EPC services for the hydro power project. Alstom supplied the turbines. They provided two francis turbines each with a 70MW capacity. Alstom also supplied the electric generators for the project. The generator capacity is 80 MVA.
The Barragem do Torr\u00e3o is a pumped storage project. Its hydro reservoir can hold 22 million cubic meters of water. The gross head of the project is 53 meters. This design allows the Barragem do Torr\u00e3o to store energy. It releases it when needed.
Beyond its functional role, the Barragem do Torr\u00e3o also supports local activities. Agriculture, livestock, and fishing thrive. Gastronomy and tourism benefit from the dam’s presence. The Estrada Nacional 108 serves the dam.
Interestingly, the dam is not classified for secondary activities. This means that specific recreational uses of the reservoir are not officially designated. Despite this, guided tours are available.
