Marvel at the Baron of Quadras Palace. This architectural gem stands before you. Its history whispers tales of a bygone era.

The Baron of Quadras Palace a small Modernista palace is located in Barcelona. It stands on Avinguda Diagonal. It sits equidistant between La Pedrera and Casa de les Punxes. Josep Puig i Cadafalch designed it. Construction lasted from 1904 to 1906. In 1976 it became a National Historical Monument of Artistic Interest. Today the Institut Ramon Llull’s offices reside within its walls.

Puig i Cadafalch masterfully renovated an existing building. He transformed a narrow plot facing Carrer Rosselló. The result is a stunning Modernista building with two facades. One faces Avinguda Diagonal the other Carrer Rosselló. The palace’s location is prime. It sits in the Quadrat d’or Barcelona’s golden square of Modernista architecture. Nearby stand other architectural marvels like Casa Milà La Pedrera Casa Batlló and Casa Calvet. These were designed by Antoni Gaudí. Casa Amatller and Casa de les Punxes also designed by Puig i Cadafalch stand nearby. Casa Lleó Morera designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner completes the impressive ensemble.

The rear façade facing Carrer Rosselló features exquisite floral motifs. These extend horizontally and vertically across three balconies and down four floors.

Step inside. The entryway is spectacular. Its elaborate stairway glasswork and Roman mosaic flooring are captivating. Master ironworker Manuel Ballarín i Lancuentra crafted the iron grillwork. It graces the ground floor doors on both Avinguda Diagonal and Carrer Rosselló. The large rooms facing Avinguda Diagonal were for receiving visitors. They showcase Moorish-style stone arches. Colorful ceramic floral motifs and Gothic sculptural elements adorn them.

The rooms facing Carrer Rosselló were for family life. Intricate floral stucco relief work graces the walls. Bold Ionic columns display floral and plant motifs. This reflects the English Arts and Crafts style. The fireplace the heart of the home stands as a focal point. Don’t miss the exquisite woodwork of the coffered ceilings and hardwood floors. The geometric designs are a testament to the artistry of the time.

The palace has undergone several restorations. In 1980 it housed the Music Museum of Barcelona. This moved to the Auditori in 2001. From 2003 to 2013 Casa Àsia occupied the building. It now resides in a Modernista pavilion at the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau. A 2015 restoration focused on the entrance. Architect Àngel Gil and restorers Anna González and Josep Pasqual meticulously conserved its features. They restored stone mosaics tiles sgraffiti ceiling coffering wrought iron railings a wooden door and bronze lamps.
