Ghosts of the rails whisper secrets at Barnwell Junction. This unassuming spot north of Newmarket Road holds a surprising history. Opened in 1884 by the Great Eastern Railway Barnwell Junction served passengers traveling between Cambridge and Mildenhall. It wasn’t just any station though. During both World Wars ambulance trains unloaded here. Imagine the sounds of suffering soldiers their moans echoing across Barnwell Lake. These trains were mobile hospitals complete with operating rooms and pharmacies. They offered vital care transporting wounded soldiers to rural hospitals.

Barnwell Junction wasn’t a true junction. It only served the Mildenhall branch line. Its passenger service ended in 1962. Goods traffic ceased in 1966. Yet the station buildings remain. They’re now a private residence. Parts of the platform and tracks still exist a ghostly reminder of bustling days. A local recalled the excitement of catching a train there for a day trip to Hunstanton. If the excursion train didn’t stop passengers had to walk all the way to Cambridge Station.

Barnwell Junction’s story isn’t just about trains. It’s woven into the fabric of Barnwell itself. This area once known for poverty and even prostitution saw the efforts of missionaries like Ion Keith-Falconer. He aimed to alleviate suffering in the early 20th century. Barnwell’s past includes a priory and a leper chapel. This shows the area’s long and varied history. Today Barnwell Junction sits quietly a testament to a bygone era. The name lingers on in street names and memories. It stands as a silent witness to the transformations of Cambridge and its people. Its existence quietly reminds us of the junction’s impact. The station may be silent but its story continues to resonate.
