Is it possible for a church to have more than one heart? Barnwell Baptist Church seems to prove it can. Located right here on Howard Road, Barnwell Baptist Church isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a vibrant hub woven into the fabric of the Cambridge community. Barnwell Baptist Church’s story begins long before my tour, but its present is as lively as ever. Services take place every Sunday at 10:30 am, but its doors are open throughout the week, embracing various community groups and initiatives. The church hosts meetings for Abbey Action and has played a key role in the Thorpe Way Action Days. Barnwell Baptist Church even opens its doors for a yearly Macmillan Coffee Morning, a testament to its dedication to serving beyond its walls. Leading the congregation is Stuart Wood, who became the minister in 2004. His involvement extends beyond the church, serving as chaplain for Cambridge United FC, the East Anglian Air Ambulance, and Peasgood and Skeates Funeral Directors. His dedication underscores Barnwell Baptist Church’s commitment to serving the wider Cambridge community. He is also actively involved in connecting church leaders across the city, fostering a sense of unity and collaboration. Barnwell Baptist Church’s connection to the community isn’t just through its minister. It also houses the Cambridge Money Advice Centre and Hope Into Action, demonstrating a commitment to practical support and positive change. Even the church’s newsletter, started in 2010, helps to keep the local community connected. Barnwell Baptist Church on Howard Road isn’t simply a place for Sunday service. It’s a beacon of community engagement, a place where faith and action meet to create a positive impact on Cambridge.
