Barnim-Gymnasium is one of the largest gymnasia in Berlin and the largest in the Lichtenberg district. Established in 1993, it initially operated within the classrooms of other schools. This continued until its own building was completed in September 1998 on Ahrensfelder Chaussee. The Barnim-Gymnasium building itself is a work of art. Inside, you’ll find wall sculptures by Japanese artist Mutsuo Hirano and concrete frescoes with motifs by Thomas Lange. A more recent addition is a light installation by Lynn Weirich from 2017. The building was designed with accessibility in mind. Since the 1997/98 school year, it has integrated students with physical disabilities. Barnim-Gymnasium is more than just bricks and mortar. As an “Open All-Day School,” it provides a warm lunch in the cafeteria and additional food and drinks in the “Barnim-Café.” It collaborates with the “Kietz für Kids” sports club for extracurricular activities. The library, open until 4 pm, is not just a place for books. It offers computers and board games, fostering social interaction. Learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door. Barnim-Gymnasium partners with “Schlaufuchs Berlin” to provide tutoring and support, often led by upperclassmen and university students. And speaking of popular culture, parts of the web and television series “Druck” were filmed right here at Barnim-Gymnasium.
