Barisha Dakshin’s story begins long ago. In 1608 Laksmikanta Roy Choudhury received a vast land grant. He established a Durga Puja in 1610. This is now considered the oldest Durga Puja in Bengal. Generations of the Roy Choudhury family lived here. They built temples and fostered cultural traditions. Barisha Dakshin became their largest settlement. They initiated other religious observances. These include the Chandi Puja and Jagadhatri Puja. Numerous temples were also constructed including the Annapurna Temple and the Radhakanto Temple. The Barisha Rathayatra Utsav started in 1719. It’s one of Kolkata’s oldest and most renowned chariot festivals. The Sabarna Roy Choudhury family’s six Durga Pujas are world-famous. They draw thousands of people every year. They are held at Aatchala Bari Baro Bari Mejobari Kalikingkar Bhawan Benaki Bari and Majher Bari. The Aatchala Bari hosts the oldest of these dating back to 1610.
