A towering minaret points towards the heavens. This is Bari Masjid. Its grandeur is breathtaking.

Bari Masjid also known as Nakhoda Masjid is more than just a mosque. It’s a testament to the Cutchi Memon community’s legacy in Kolkata. Their story is woven into the very stones of this magnificent structure. These skilled traders and seafarers known as Nakhodas arrived in Kolkata around 1849. They quickly established themselves as prominent merchants. Their success allowed them to build this architectural marvel.

Construction began in 1926. It was completed in 1934. The cost was a staggering fifteen lakh rupees. The mosque is an imitation of Akbar’s Tomb in Sikandra. It’s a stunning example of Mughal architecture. The prayer hall is vast. It can accommodate up to 10000 worshippers. Three majestic domes crown the structure. Two soaring minarets rise 151 feet high. Twenty-five smaller minarets add to the mosque’s impressive skyline. The entrance is a replica of Fatehpur Sikri’s Buland Darwaza. Red sandstone from Dholpur was used to create this imposing gateway.

The mosque isn’t just impressive from the outside. Inside intricate ornamentation and artistic designs create an air of serene beauty. Notice the red rock paving leading to a small ablution pool. This is where worshippers cleanse themselves before prayer. The green light atop the highest minaret signals the start of the Ramadan fast. It’s a tradition observed by local Muslims.

Bari Masjid is more than a place of worship. It’s a symbol of the Cutchi Memons’ enduring contribution to Kolkata’s rich cultural tapestry. Their entrepreneurial spirit and philanthropic deeds continue to resonate through the city’s history. Their story is one of resilience faith and success. A story written in the very architecture of this magnificent mosque. Take a moment to admire its beauty. Let its grandeur inspire you.
