Picture the scene. We stand before the Bärenquell-Brauerei. A relic of Berlin’s brewing past. This isn’t just any brewery. It’s a story etched in red brick and whispered through crumbling walls.
The Bärenquell-Brauerei began life in 1882. It wasn’t always called Bärenquell though. Its original name was Borussia-Brauerei. Founded by entrepreneurs Meinert and Kampfhenkel it started small. Just a main brewery and a residential building. This building housed the master brewer and his servants. This modest beginning belies the brewery’s future impact on Berlin. The residential building designed by Robert Buntzel is a marvel. It’s neo-Renaissance style with its white balustrades and cornices still stands today. In fact it’s the oldest surviving building in all of Niederschöneweide.
In 1889 Schultheiss AG took over. This marked a period of significant expansion. Between 1902 and 1906 architect H O Obrikat added neo-Gothic towers and turrets. The brewery’s capacity grew. It could now supply the entire Berlin area with Schultheiss beer. By 1920 the company was Schlutheiss-Patzenhofer AG. To keep its bottled beer cool they built a four-story warehouse. This was complete with a cooling tower. Underground cellars weren’t feasible near the Spree River. The complex became vast. It included residential houses brewery plants engine rooms a bottling plant and hop storage. It was one of the largest and most modern breweries in the area.
After World War II the GDR took control. They renamed it VEB Bärenquell. They modernized further. They even built a second brew house in 1969. Bärenquell was one of the “big four” breweries in East Berlin. But the fall of the GDR brought privatization. Henniger Brewery bought Bärenquell in 1990. The end was near. In 1994 beer production stopped. It moved to Kassel. The last Berliner Pilsner Spezial was brewed. The brewery officially closed in 1995. Its rivals survived. They now belong to Berliner-Kindl-Schultheiss GmbH.
Today the Bärenquell-Brauerei stands as a silent testament to its past. While plans exist for renovation many obstacles remain. These include the Denkmalschutz regulations that protect the buildings. The future of the Bärenquell-Brauerei remains uncertain. But its story endures a legacy of beer brewing and architectural ingenuity. A reminder of Berlin’s rich and complex history.
