This isn’t just any bridge system. It’s the Barelang Bridge a symbol of Batam’s ambition. It connects Batam Rempang and Galang islands. The name itself is an acronym. Barelang. Clever isn’t it?

The project started in 1992. It wasn’t just about connecting islands. It was about creating industrial hubs. Jusuf Habibie the then president oversaw this enormous undertaking. Locals affectionately call it the Habibie Bridge. A tribute to his vision.

The bridges aren’t all the same. Each one is unique. Tengku Fisabilillah is the longest a cable-stayed marvel. Nara Singa is a cantilever bridge. Ali Haji is a girder bridge. Sultan Zainal Abidin is another cantilever. Tuanku Tambusai is an arch bridge. Finally Raja Kecik the smallest of the six. A diverse collection of engineering solutions.

Bruce Ramsay of VSL designed these beauties. Habibie wanted to showcase Indonesian engineering. He wanted to develop new technologies within Indonesia. He succeeded. The Barelang Bridge is proof.

The full journey across all six bridges is about 50 kilometers. A 50 minute drive. But the view from this viewpoint? That’s priceless.
