Seven meters high it once stood a formidable wall. This is the Bardowicker Mauer. Right here before you stands a significant portion of Luneburg’s ancient city fortifications.

The Bardowicker Mauer isn’t just a wall it’s a testament to Luneburg’s rich history. For centuries it protected the city its salt trade a source of immense wealth and envy. The massive structure with its inner and outer walls reaching up to fourteen meters at its highest point speaks volumes about the city’s determination to safeguard its prosperity.

Imagine the journeymen the salt workers using the wall as they made their way to the grayscale tower. This winding tower served as a watchtower too. From there they accessed tunnels leading to the Hutten Quelle a source of brine. This brine flowed through drilled logs to the saltworks. You can learn more about this journey in Luneburg’s Salt Museum. The corridor itself however is off limits to the public.

The Bardowicker Mauer is impressive even today. Its length spans four hundred meters. The inner wall is particularly striking especially from Hinter der Bardowicker Mauer street. Notice the small houses clinging to the wall. These houses were once homes for the saltworks’ employees and prison guards. They are known as Fahrt- and Gerichtsknechtehauser.

The wall’s construction involved considerable effort. Massive stones and bricks formed its foundation. Its interior the wall itself is filled with earth and rubble. To maintain it the citizens shared the responsibility. Each guild had a section to defend. Failure to participate resulted in hefty fines.

Sadly much of the original wall is gone. Some sections were demolished to make way for modern infrastructure. Yet the remaining part of the Bardowicker Mauer remains a powerful symbol. It stands as a reminder of Luneburg’s resilience. It is a physical embodiment of Luneburg’s past struggles and triumphs. It is a reminder of the importance of preserving our cultural heritage for future generations. Take a moment to appreciate the Bardowicker Mauer a tangible link to Luneburg’s remarkable history.
