In 1590, a unique tomb arose near the magnificent Humayun’s Tomb in Delhi. Known locally as Barber’s Tomb or Nai-ka-Gumbad, this elegant structure stands as a testament to a lesser-known story. Barber’s Tomb is nestled within the southeastern quadrant of Humayun’s Garden Tomb, separated only by a small path from Humayun’s Tomb’s shared wall with the Nila Gumbad site. Its presence so close to the emperor’s resting place hints at its significance. Barber’s Tomb is constructed of red and gray sandstone, sitting atop a square plinth. Stairs on the southern side lead to the tomb’s entrance, mirroring the design of those at Nila Gumbad. The tomb boasts a symmetrical square plan. Four chhatris grace its corners, while squinches adorn the ceiling and alcoves. Each facade features a large central alcove with two vertically stacked openings. These openings, except for the entrance, are veiled with intricate jali screens. The jali patterns echo the geometric tile designs found in Humayun’s Tomb. On the western facade, a unique lower jali-screened opening showcases two mihrabs, one facing outward, the other inward. These mihrabs blend early Indo-Islamic and Sultanate architectural styles. Crowning Barber’s Tomb is a gumbad dome resting on an octagonal drum. Each side of the drum is pierced by a jali-screened opening, and a band of kangura connects eight corner guldastas around the drum’s top. This arrangement creates a layered effect similar to Humayun’s Tomb’s dome drum. Engaged colonettes outline each vertical corner of Barber’s Tomb, culminating in guldastas joined by kangura ornamentation. Inside, two cenotaphs rest without inscriptions, adding to the air of mystery. The only clue to the tomb’s date is the number 999 carved on one of the graves, likely corresponding to the Hijri year 1590-91. While folklore suggests it belongs to Humayun’s royal barber, commissioned by Akbar, the true occupants remain unknown. Barber’s Tomb continues to whisper its secrets, a hidden gem within the grandeur of Humayun’s complex. It reminds us that history is woven from many threads, not just the lives of emperors, but also those who served them.
