Picture this a sprawling Neolithic settlement larger than many modern towns. This is Baodun in Chengdu a place where history whispers secrets from the dawn of civilization. Baodun isn’t just a village name it’s the heart of a culture that thrived thousands of years ago. The Baodun culture flourished on the Chengdu Plain between 2700 BC and 1700 BC. It predates the Xia and Shang dynasties bridging a crucial gap in our understanding of early Chinese civilization.

Imagine the sheer scale of Baodun. Its two walls enclosed an area of approximately 245 hectares that’s over 2.4 million square meters. The inner wall alone covers 66 hectares. Archaeologists estimate that it took 100 people five years to construct these monumental walls. The method used bidirectional earth piling and diagonal tamping a technique also seen in Sanxingdui.

These walls weren’t just for show. They were a testament to the sophisticated engineering and social organization of the Baodun people. This culture didn’t just build walls though. Baodun is renowned for its significant contribution to agriculture. Here archaeologists found the earliest evidence of rice and foxtail millet cultivation in southwest China. Rice was the dominant crop alongside weeds commonly associated with paddy rice cultivation. Imagine the bustling fields providing sustenance for a large population.

The Baodun people weren’t just farmers. They were skilled artisans. Recently unearthed bamboo fragments dating back 4500 years suggest a sophisticated use of this material in construction. They built houses using the wattle and daub technique but with a unique twist bamboo frames and mud walls.

Pottery shards discovered here resemble those found in Sanxingdui suggesting a connection between the two cultures. It is speculated that Sanxingdui culture is a successor to the Baodun culture. Baodun represents the largest walled Neolithic settlement in China a remarkable feat of ancient engineering. It is also a window into the development of agriculture and the daily lives of the people who lived here thousands of years ago. Baodun’s legacy isn’t just in its impressive size. It’s in the seeds of rice and millet planted here the skills of the artisans and the echoes of their lives that continue to resonate. This is Baodun a place where the past comes alive.
