The pagoda’s construction began in 1942. Venerable Vo Ha Thuat, then a layperson, bought land. He became a hermit and later ordained. He devoted the land to establish Buu Long Zen Monastery. Initially, it had small meditation rooms and a hall.
After Venerable Vo Ha Thuat passed away, an Ancestral Stupa honored him. Master Do Tong also received a stupa after his passing. The monastery became the Buu Long Ancestral Pagoda.
Chief monk Vien Minh reconstructed the pagoda. Renovations from 1992 to 2018 shaped its current appearance. Its architecture blends Southeast Asian styles. It draws inspiration from Thailand, India, and the Nguyen dynasty. Its yellow color resembles Thai pagodas. Yet, it includes Vietnamese dragon and crane motifs.
Bao Long Pagoda follows Theravada Buddhism. This differs from Vietnam’s more common Mahayana Buddhism. Theravada is prevalent in Sri Lanka and Thailand. This explains the pagoda’s Thai-like design.
