Bangshuiyu

Deep in the heart of Yanqing District, lies Bangshuiyu Village. It’s more than just a village. Bangshuiyu is a gateway to a section of the Great Wall steeped in history and legend. Bangshuiyu is nestled near a unique parallelogram-shaped tower, a curious anomaly in the world of Great Wall architecture. This tower stands as a silent sentinel, guarding the secrets of Bangshuiyu’s past. From Bangshuiyu, the Great Wall snakes southwest towards the Beijing-Hebei border, a 50-kilometer stretch ending at Bijiashan. The wall here isn’t just a continuous line of brick and stone. It features a complex network of fortresses and other defensive structures. One of these is the unusual tower near Huajiayao, a valley near Bangshuiyu. The tower isn’t the usual rectangle, square, or round shape. It’s a parallelogram, with angles of approximately 30 and 60 degrees, adding a unique dimension to the Bangshuiyu landscape. The terrain around Bangshuiyu is challenging. The western ascent from Huajiayao towards Shixiaguan is particularly steep and treacherous, with loose bricks making every step a precarious endeavor. But the views from the top are breathtaking, revealing the strategic importance of Bangshuiyu and its surrounding fortifications. Bangshuiyu isn’t just about the Great Wall. It’s also the starting point of an ancient road, Waishi Road. This unpaved road winds its way through the countryside, offering a glimpse into the rural life that has existed alongside the grand history of the wall. Bangshuiyu also offers glimpses into the history of earlier Ming Dynasty walls. Near the main brick wall, you can find remnants of these older earth walls. These vestiges offer a layered perspective on the area’s defenses, showcasing the evolution of military architecture over time. Bangshuiyu’s location, approximately 59 kilometers northwest of downtown Beijing, makes it an accessible journey into history. So, as you stand here, in the shadow of the Great Wall, remember Bangshuiyu. Remember its unique parallelogram tower, its challenging climbs, and its ancient roads.
