Unearthed in the 1970s these ancient mounds whisper secrets. Welcome to the Bangi-dong Ancient Baekje Tombs a significant historical site in Seoul. These aren’t just any tombs. They are a window into the Hanseong Baekje Kingdom a civilization that thrived along the Hangang River for almost five centuries starting in 18 BCE. Eight tombs in total lie here. They are remnants of a powerful kingdom.

The Bangi-dong Ancient Baekje Tombs were discovered unexpectedly. They emerged during the Jamsil District Zoning Project. Imagine the surprise of the workers unearthing this forgotten history. Sadly most of the artifacts were stolen. Time and thieves have taken their toll. Yet the tombs themselves remain remarkably well-preserved. The original structures stand as testaments to skilled Baekje craftsmanship.

Each tomb is a circular mound. Inside you’ll find a square or rectangular burial chamber. Stone walls and earthen floors form these chambers. A passage connects the entrance to the inner sanctum. The design varies slightly from tomb to tomb. A fascinating detail is that archaeologists initially believed the few remaining artifacts dated back to the Baekje period. However later analysis suggested they were from the Unified Silla Period. This highlights the ongoing evolution of our understanding of history. This small detail speaks volumes about the complexity of archaeological interpretation.

Today the area is a peaceful park. You can wander along paths between the tombs. Feel the grass under your feet. Breathe the fresh air. Take time to contemplate the lives of those buried here. The Bangi-dong Ancient Baekje Tombs are more than just a historical site. They’re a place of quiet contemplation. A place where history and nature intertwine. Designated Historic Site No 270 these tombs are a precious part of Seoul’s rich heritage. Remember them as you leave. Remember the stories they tell. They are part of Seoul’s enduring legacy.
