“Thirsty work searching for Sita,” Rama sighed. Let me tell you about the Banganga Tank. Right here in front of us is more than just a body of water. It is a testament to faith and legend.

The Banganga Tank is an ancient water tank. It forms part of the Walkeshwar Temple Complex in Mumbai’s Malabar Hill area. This place is revered by Hindus.

Legend says that Lord Rama paused here. He was on his way from Ayodhya to Lanka. He was searching for his kidnapped wife Sita. Tired and thirsty, Rama needed water. His brother Lakshmana shot an arrow into the ground. Water sprang forth, creating a tributary of the Ganges. This is why it’s called Banganga. Ban means arrow. Ganga refers to the sacred river.

This legend has made the Banganga Tank a significant pilgrimage site. Hindus ritually wash here before entering the Walkeshwar Temple Complex. They believe the water has medicinal and purifying qualities. The tank is considered as pure as the Ganges. Some even immerse ashes here.

The Banganga Tank also houses the Shri Kashi Math. This is an important religious seat for Goud Saraswat Brahmins. You will also find samadhis. These are memorials to past heads of the Math.

The tank was built in 1127 AD. Lakshman Prabhu was the minister in the court of Silhara kings of Thane. He built it. It was rebuilt in 1715. Rama Kamath funded the reconstruction. The main temple has been reconstructed too. It is now a reinforced concrete structure.

Notice the rectangular pool structure. Steps surround it on all four sides. At the entrance are two pillars. Diyas, oil lamps, were lit here in ancient times. The tank is spring-fed. Its water remains sweet. This is despite being close to the sea. Underground valves control the water level. Overflow outlets empty into the Arabian Sea.

The ghats, or steps, around the Banganga Tank have specific purposes. The south and west are for rituals of the dead. The north and east are for auspicious rites. Pilgrims perform parikrama. This is circumambulation. They walk around the tank in a circular direction.

Look in the middle of the Banganga Tank. You will see a dhwajastambh. It is a flagpole. This symbolizes Mount Meru. Hindus consider it the center of the universe.

The Banganga Tank is more than a religious site. It has inspired many artists. It has been a location for film shoots. The government banned these activities in 2007. This was to protect the heritage site.

The Banganga Tank has witnessed many changes. Towering skyscrapers now overlook it. But it remains a place of peace and faith. The tank is a reminder of Mumbai’s rich history. It connects us to ancient legends and enduring beliefs. Take a moment to appreciate the spiritual significance of this unique place. The Banganga Tank continues to be a source of inspiration. It offers solace in the heart of Mumbai.
