Its name derives from Khlong Bangkok Yai a canal that altered the Chao Phraya’s flow in 1522 during the Ayutthaya period. This waterway became the main river. A section of the original river became what we now know as Khlong Bangkok Yai. Bangkok Yai or more precisely its Wat Arun Sub-district played a significant role in history.
