Amidst the bustling cityscape of Bangkok, lies the intriguing Bang O Subdistrict. Bang O, nestled within the larger Bang Phlat district, holds a captivating history. This subdistrict’s name, meaning “A Place of O,” refers to the Arundo donax reeds that once flourished here. Bang O has a long-standing connection to the Muslim community. For centuries, Sunni Muslims, originally from Persia, have called Bang O home. Their presence dates back to the Ayutthaya period, over 300 years ago. Bang O also played a significant role in Bangkok’s lumber trade during the 19th century, under King Rama V’s reign. The area’s sloping riverbank made it ideal for mooring ships and handling lumber. Muslim traders operated along the river, often living on houseboats, earning them the nickname “Khaek Phae,” meaning “Muslim living on a raft.” Foreign companies like Bombay Burmah and East Asiatic held timber trade concessions in Bang O. The first shophouses along Charansanitwong Road appeared in 1956, coinciding with the road’s completion. These 20 units, owned by the Manajit family, quickly filled with tenants. The Krung Thon Bridge, also known as Sang Hi Bridge, opened in 1958. This bridge simplified travel between Bangkok and Thonburi, impacting the long-standing ferry service between Bang O and Bang Krabue. The ferry service eventually ceased operations. Bang O also housed Chonlathee Thanthong, a famous luk thung composer. Today, Bang O remains a vibrant part of Bangkok, with a rich history woven into its urban fabric. The subdistrict, crisscrossed by canals like Khlong Tao It and Khlong Bang Rak, stands as a testament to its evolving past. Bang O is bordered by other districts like Bang Kruai, Bang Sue and even touches Nonthaburi Province.
