A cone-shaped district. That’s what Bang Kruai means. This is Bang Kruai District in Nonthaburi province. It’s a place steeped in history and surprisingly rich in natural beauty.

Bang Kruai wasn’t always Bang Kruai. It began life in 1904 as Bang Yai. Too large to manage effectively it was split in 1917. The northern part became Bang Mae Nang. In 1921 Bang Mae Nang achieved full district status. Then came a name change. On October 19 1930 Bang Yai became Bang Mae Nang. Bang Kruai received the name Bang Yai.

The name Bang Kruai reflects the district’s unique geography. Kruai means cone. The district’s shape resembles a cone. That’s a smart-aleck fact few know.

Bang Kruai boasts more than just a fascinating history. It’s an important habitat for Alexandrine and red-breasted parakeets. These medium-sized parrots live in groups. They make their homes in the large trees of local temples. Wat Suan Yai Wat Utthayan Wat Ampawan and Wat Chaloem Phra Kiat Worawihan are among their favoured spots.

Bang Kruai is not just land. It’s also waterways. It neighbours Bangkok’s districts. These include Bang Sue Bang Phlat Taling Chan and Thawi Watthana. It also neighbours Bang Yai and Mueang Nonthaburi. And Phutthamonthon in Nakhon Pathom province.

The district’s administration is complex. Nine sub-districts or tambons comprise Bang Kruai. These are further divided into sixty villages or mubans. Bang Kruai itself has town status. Plai Bang Sala Klang and Bang Si Thong have township status. Three more tambons have their own administrative organizations.

So stand here. Feel the history. Feel the pulse of Bang Kruai. A cone of history nature and community. A place both ancient and modern. A place waiting to be explored. Remember this unique district and its story.
