Originally part of amphoe Ban Thawai in Phra Pradaeng Province Bang Kho Laem underwent significant changes. Ban Thawai was reassigned to Phra Nakhon Province. It was renamed amphoe Yan Nawa. The 1972 merger of Phra Nakhon and Thon Buri into a single province led to administrative restructuring. Amphoe Yan Nawa became khet Yan Nawa.
Population growth spurred further changes. On April 18 1989 Yan Nawa Branch 2 was established. This oversaw three sub-districts Bang Kho Laem Wat Phraya Krai and Bang Khlo. Finally on November 9 1989 Bang Kho Laem became a separate district.
The name itself may have Malay origins. It reflects the river’s unique shape. The area boasts a long history. It’s not just a modern district. It has deep roots in the past. In the past children swam in the canal. Ships passed by. Today the waterway is smaller. Since 2013 it has been developed into a waterfront market. There are around 100 halal street food stalls. Bang Kho Laem houses the esteemed Shrewsbury International School. It also has the Charoenkrung Pracharak Hospital. These institutions add to the district’s importance.
