Can you imagine a district in Bangkok that has gone through so many transformations? Bang Khen District, located in the northern part of the city, has a rich history that reflects the dynamic growth of Bangkok. Established in 1897, Bang Khen was once a vast plain known as “Thung Bang Khen”, or Bang Khen Field. This area was a serene landscape dominated by farms. In the early 20th century, Bang Khen played a role in the “Boworadet rebellion” in 1933, becoming a battleground between the army of Prince Boworadet and government troops. This event highlighted the political tensions that were present during a pivotal period in Thailand’s history. The name “Bang Khen” itself has intriguing origins. It is believed to be a distortion of “Bang Ken,” meaning “Place of Push.” This name stems from a local folk tale called “Legend of Lord Uthong.” The story tells of Lord Uthong’s gold tanker running aground in a canal, requiring pushing to get through the tangle. The evolution of Bang Khen continued as Thailand modernized. In 1972, when Thonburi and Phra Nakhon provinces merged to form Krung Thep Maha Nakhon (present-day Bangkok), Bang Khen transformed from an amphoe (district) into a khet (district) of the capital city. Over time, Bang Khen, once a sprawling district, was reshaped due to administrative changes. Portions of the area were separated to create new districts like Don Mueang, Chatuchak, and Sai Mai. These divisions reflect Bangkok’s rapid urbanization and the need for efficient administrative divisions. Today, Bang Khen stands as a testament to Bangkok’s growth, from a tranquil farmland to a bustling district within a modern metropolis.
