Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s the legacy of the hummingbird tree, here at the Bang Khae District Office. This unassuming building, right before your eyes, is the administrative heart of Bang Khae district. You might be wondering why a district is named after a tree. Well, the name “Bang Khae” translates to “county of the hummingbird tree.” Legend says that this area was once teeming with these beautiful creatures. Though the hum of their wings might be gone, their memory lives on in the district’s name and its identity. Established as recently as March 6th, 1998, Bang Khae District Office was born from a merger of Phasi Charoen Sakha 1 district and Lak Song sub-district. It might seem like a young district compared to some of Bangkok’s ancient quarters. But its story is still being written every day, and its future is as bright as the feathers of its namesake hummingbird.
