Is that an obelisk or a pyramid? This granite structure before us is the Bandeirinha da Saúde. It has a fascinating story. Let’s uncover its secrets.

The Bandeirinha da Saúde stands near the Palácio das Sereias. From here we have a fantastic view of the Douro River and Vila Nova de Gaia. But what was the Bandeirinha da Saúde actually used for?

Back in the 16th and 17th centuries, between 1597 and 1633, the Bandeirinha da Saúde served an important purpose. It protected Porto from diseases brought in from abroad. The stonemason Bastião Fernandes built this important city marker.

When ships approached Porto, they had to stop mid-river near the Bandeirinha da Saúde. A health inspection was conducted. This ensured diseases like the plague did not enter the city. A flag was raised when a ship was spotted. This signaled the ship to halt for inspection.

If anyone on board showed symptoms, they were sent to the Mosteiro de Santo António da Piedade in Gaia. This monastery became a quarantine area. Crew members stayed there until they recovered. The ship itself was also quarantined.

Today, you see a metal flag. But originally, the Bandeirinha da Saúde used a cloth flag. Cloth made it more visible. By the 18th century, the Bandeirinha da Saúde lost its original function.

Nevertheless, the pillar remains. It is a preserved piece of Porto’s history. The Bandeirinha da Saúde serves as a reminder of a time when disease control shaped city life. Take a moment to appreciate this silent guardian. It once played a vital role in safeguarding Porto’s health. The Bandeirinha da Saúde is more than just a stone pillar. It’s a symbol of resilience and protection.
