Beneath the shimmering Caribbean surface, a hidden world thrives. This is the Bancos de Salmedina, a vibrant reef teeming with life. Bancos de Salmedina isn’t just a collection of coral. It’s a dynamic ecosystem shaped by unique geological forces. Here, active mud volcanoes sculpt the underwater landscape. They create a mosaic of habitats, from coral gardens to muddy valleys.

The Bancos de Salmedina are located off the coast of Cartagena. They are composed of five main elevations: Salmedina, Burbujas, Ukura, Kubina, and Ygio. These banks rise from the seabed, creating shallow plateaus and steep slopes. The shallowest areas, found on the Salmedina bank, are bathed in sunlight. These areas are dominated by algae, a testament to the nutrient-rich waters flowing from the mainland. Yet, even here, resilient coral colonies of Montastraea annularis and Siderastrea siderea persist.

Deeper down, the Bancos de Salmedina reveal their true coral splendor. Below the algae-dominated shallows, the water clarity improves dramatically. The deeper slopes of the banks boast impressive coral cover. Ukura and Kubina banks, in particular, stand out. They have a remarkable 55% coral cover. This is higher than some nearby, more developed reefs. A deep canyon separating these banks from Salmedina might be their secret. It acts as a natural barrier, protecting them from sediment and debris.

The banks of Ygio and Burbujas also exhibit healthy coral communities. However, the presence of sediment-tolerant coral species and calcareous algae suggests a dynamic environment. Sedimentation rates fluctuate, influencing the composition of the reef. The constant mud flow from the volcano on Burbujas bank creates an even more unusual environment. The western, eastern, and southern flanks of the volcano are coated in mud. This prevents coral growth but favors hardy algae. In stark contrast, the northern flank thrives with coral. It’s protected from the mud flow by the prevailing current.

The Bancos de Salmedina also bear scars from human activity. Patches of dead Acropora palmata and coral rubble hint at past blast fishing. The shallower areas, more accessible to fishing boats, show the most damage. But deeper down, life flourishes. Bancos de Salmedina is a story of resilience, where life adapts and thrives even in the face of natural and human-induced challenges. The underwater world of Bancos de Salmedina awaits your discovery.
