Chestnut Island. That’s what Bamseom means. Look at it now a pair of islets in the Han River. Can you believe this tranquil haven was once bustling with shipbuilders?

Bamseom Island a vital part of Seoul’s history has seen dramatic changes. In the Joseon era it housed a community of skilled shipbuilders. They built their lives and boats on this small land. Then came the Seogang Bridge. Its construction required the use of the western islet as support for one of its beams. This led to the islanders’ relocation.

But the story doesn’t end there. February 10 1968 marked a pivotal moment. Bamseom was detonated. The rubble was used for the embankment construction during Yeouido’s development. This event split the island into Upper and Lower Bamseom.

Despite this destruction nature persevered. The island’s transformation is remarkable. Today Bamseom is a protected sanctuary. It’s a haven for migratory birds. Mallards great egrets mandarins common kestrels and Eastern spot-billed ducks call this place home. They find refuge and food among the willow trees and itch reeds. About 108 plant species thrive here.

Observe the area carefully. You can see that Bamseom is more than just a pretty face. The waters surrounding the islets are vital spawning grounds. They nurture many Korean indigenous fish species. In the summer it is a breeding ground for the spot-billed duck and the black-crowned night heron. This makes Bamseom a Ramsar site a wetland of international importance.

Though access is restricted you can appreciate Bamseom’s beauty from afar. The island has become six times larger than its original size thanks to the sediment from the Han River. This shows the incredible power of nature. Six observatory platforms and direction boards have been built. They allow visitors to observe the birds during the winter months a crucial time for these magnificent creatures.

Remember Bamseom Island. It’s a testament to resilience. A place where nature has reclaimed its space. A place where history and ecology intertwine in a captivating display. Its story is one of destruction rebirth and the enduring power of the natural world. It is a story worthy of a place in Seoul’s narrative.
