Does the name bayernhafen Bamberg ring a bell? It should. This isn’t just a port. It is a strategic hub connecting Europe’s economic centers. We are standing at the Bamberg Hafen. It is more than just docks and cranes.

Bamberg Hafen features two basins on the Main-Donau-Kanal. The port extends over 96 hectares. Bayernhafen GmbH & Co. KG operates the port. This company manages other inland ports owned by Bavaria. The quays stretch for 1,900 meters across both basins. Six harbor cranes stand ready for heavy lifting. The port’s rail network spans 10 kilometers. It connects to the Deutsche Bahn.

Bamberg Hafen is a multimodal hub. It handles diverse goods. Think agricultural products like grain and fertilizer. Also consider stones, mineral oil, and metal scrap. Even general cargo and containers pass through here.

Around 75 companies operate within the port. These businesses focus on logistics, production, and recycling. They provide essential services. These companies employ about 1,800 people. The port indirectly supports 4,000 regional jobs.

In 2016, Bamberg Hafen handled 322,311 tons of goods by ship. That was 4.49% of Bavaria’s total shipping traffic. Bavaria saw 7,174,477 tons of goods shipped that year.

Bamberg’s history as a port stretches back centuries. Records mention merchants using the Regnitz-Main waterway in 1062. In 1348, Bamberg’s law book mentioned ship loading. By 1771, regulations covered warehouses and weighing scales.

The early 19th century saw surveys for a canal linking the Main and Donau rivers. A shipping connection between Bamberg and Cologne was established in 1836. King Ludwig I of Bavaria opened the Ludwig-Donau-Main-Kanal in 1846. It connected Bamberg and Kelheim after ten years of construction.

The Prinz-Ludwig-Hafen was built north of the city in 1912. In 1958, a new Bavarian state port replaced the old city port. The Bamberg port authority was established on May 13, 1958. The port’s inauguration occurred on September 25, 1962. The completion of the Main expansion was also celebrated.

The newly built port handled over 3,000,000 tons of goods by 1966. Bamberg Hafen evolved into a multimodal freight hub. It gained national importance. A new container terminal opened in 2008.

The Hafenbahn Bamberg connects the port to the DB AG rail network. The railway includes an access line with the VzG number 5101. It also includes the port station and several loading tracks. The total track length is 8.5 km.

The access line branches off the Bamberg-Rottendorf railway line. It crosses Coburger Straße at a level crossing. The line bypasses Bamberg’s main cemetery. It crosses Hallstadter Straße near Laubanger. A track then leads to the quay and the port station.

The port station has five tracks. Tracks 3 and 4 are 360 m long. They serve as loading tracks for the container terminal. Reach stackers transfer containers between road and rail.

The bayernhafen Bamberg has become an innovative center. It is a vital link in the European supply chain. Next time you see a ship, remember the intricate network connecting it to this very spot.
