Ever wondered why this imposing structure is called Baluarte de Santa Clara? Its name comes from the neighboring convent of Santa Clara de Asis. Today, that convent is the Hotel Santa Clara.

Baluarte de Santa Clara stands as a sentinel overlooking the Caribbean waters. It is a testament to Cartagena’s colonial past. This fortification showcases the military architecture of its time. Its purpose? To defend against enemies arriving from the North Sea. It also protected against the sea’s ravages.

The initial construction happened between 1617 and 1630. Cristobal de Roda and Francisco de Murga were the engineers. Murga added a revetment. However, the North Sea destroyed these works.

Later, between 1714 and 1719, Juan de Herrera y Sotomayor repaired it. But storms ruined it again. In 1742, Juan Bautista Mac Evan reinforced it. Finally, Antonio de Arevalo modified the Baluarte de Santa Clara in 1761. He demolished its right flank. Arevalo connected it to the troop barracks called Las Bovedas. He used a ramp.

The Baluarte de Santa Clara suffered numerous attacks from the sea. The sea undermined its structure. This required constant reconstruction. The Baluarte de Santa Clara is part of the Muralla de la Marina.

Imagine this place bustling with activity. Picture soldiers manning the 14 cannons. The Baluarte de Santa Clara was a vital part of Cartagena’s defense system.

Today, the Baluarte de Santa Clara serves as a public space. You can stroll along its ramparts. Enjoy panoramic views of the city and the sea. It is a photographer’s dream.

When you visit, come early or late in the day. The temperatures are cooler. The crowds are thinner. Wear comfortable shoes to explore the cobblestone paths.

Take a moment to appreciate the history here. The Baluarte de Santa Clara tells a story of battles and resilience. It is a must see landmark in Cartagena.
