Whispers of “Baltar, Baltar” drift on the wind. They carry tales of ancient origins. Here in Baltar, we uncover layers of history. Baltar is a town in Paredes, Portugal. It boasts a population of 4,720. Baltar officially became a town on July 1, 2003. The name itself has a mysterious etymology. Some believe Baltar comes from the Celtic words “balt” (water) and “aar” (current). Others suggest a Germanic origin, linking it to the name Walter. Documented as far back as 1087, Baltar’s roots run deep. In the Middle Ages, Baltar belonged to Aguiar de Sousa. King João I granted Baltar the title of Honra in 1386. He then gifted it to João Rodrigues Pereira. Pereira later traded it with Constable Nuno Álvares Pereira in 1401. The Constable then gave Baltar to his daughter and her husband, the Counts of Barcelos and Bragança. Baltar thrived under their rule. It had its own council, court, and even a pelourinho. King João VI confirmed these privileges in 1763. Baltar remained under the House of Bragança until the 19th century. Its population reached 2,070 by 1801. Briefly, in 1834, Baltar became its own municipality. This short-lived era included nine parishes. Most later joined Paredes. The poet Daniel Faria, born in Baltar, adds to its rich tapestry. Baltar holds more than just history. It is a living town with festivals and a vibrant community. The Senhor dos Aflitos festival in June and the Senhora das Necessidades in August are key events. The São Miguel festival in September honors the town’s patron saint. Baltar stands as a testament to the passage of time. It whispers stories of Celtic origins, noble families, and a brief moment of autonomy.
