The Irish Refugee Council (IRC) was very concerned about the institutional response to attacks on the residents of Balseskin. The centre had the best medical and therapeutic facilities for asylum seekers in Ireland. Balseskin Reception Centre was purpose-built five years ago at a cost of millions. It was the only purpose-built reception centre in the country. Sadly, Balseskin closed, causing a great loss to meeting the medical needs of asylum seekers.
