Torrozelas itself is a village with a history. It is located in the district of Coimbra. The village sits at an altitude of about 600 meters. Torrozelas is surrounded by the villages of Aveleira Monte Redondo Salgueiro and Folques.
The name Torrozelas may come from the Latin word “turris.” This meant tower. Its strategic position offered a wide view over deep valleys. Its position was similar to that of a watchtower. The Penedos formed an almost inaccessible fortress.
The early residents of Torrozelas were shepherds. They lived in isolation. This was due to the mountainous location. They preferred to settle where agriculture was possible. Torrozelas had a considerable population density. Its location served as an entry and exit point. It connected a vast mountain area to Arganil.
In 1758 the area saw a population increase. This led to greater economic activity. By the early 19th century prosperous merchants were present.
In 1864 a migration occurred. The railway connecting Lisbon to Porto boosted progress. However it also started the population decline in inland areas.
Torrozelas faced water scarcity. The village was far from natural water sources. In 1916 they captured water from Quinta da Boavista and Barroca do Salgueiro. The water was led to a stone basin installed in Terreiro do Santo. This basin was likely the first water reservoir for the population.
In May 1946 water flowed through the pipes. The reservoir was located in Carreiros.
The idea to open the Estrada de Penetração na Serra gained traction. In 1876 the government tasked the Arganil Municipal Council with its study. This road would connect the district capital to Castelo Branco.
The construction of the road minimized unemployment. The first section between Arganil and Folques was completed before 1900. It extended to Quinta do Mosteiro. In June 1936 the first section of the road was almost complete.
In 1893 the Chapel of Nossa Senhora dos Milagres was inaugurated. It sits in Eira near the Penedos. From there you can see the Alva valley.
In 1933 Romão Jorge drove his Ford through Torrozelas. He was named the “Hero of the Mountains.”
