The Baloi Reservoir was built in 1977. It began operations in 1978. It supplied 30 liters of water per second to Pelita, Jodoh, Nagoya, and the surrounding areas. The reservoir held the promise of clean water. It was a vital resource for Batam’s growing population. But progress has a price. Uncontrolled settlements sprang up around the reservoir, particularly in the early 2000s. This coincided with Batam’s rapid urbanization. Sadly, this growth took a toll on the Baloi Reservoir. Pollution became a significant issue. Detergents, chromium, cadmium, and lead contaminated the water. By 2012, the Baloi Reservoir was no longer functional. The once pristine waters became a giant septic tank. The Baloi Reservoir serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between development and environmental protection.
